The Challenge: Design and Build Under Pressure
The Engineering Olympics is a fast paced competition to design and build structures that meet certain criteria –within tight deadlines. In each contest, the teams are given the materials, tools, objectives and deadline. With each subsequent contest, the challenges get more difficult. Each competition is scored differently. This encourages each team to understand the measure of success, and plan accordingly. For this 2.5 hour event, there are 3 engineering competitions that are selected from an intriguing list that includes: Marshmallow Shooter, Rocket Launchers, The Ball Machine, The Tower, Marshmallow Catapult, Walking on Eggs, Mousetrap Cars, and more. It’s extremely popular with engineers.
The Engineering Olympics is a totally engaging competition where creativity clashes with constraint, where ingenuity trumps brute force, and where collaboration beats out bravado. It’s a competition built for the minds that build, a place where the true champions are those who can out-think, out-design, and out-innovate under tight deadlines.
More Than Just Games: A Glimpse into Real-World Engineering
Unlike typical team building events, Engineering Olympics offers a real “business simulation” that challenges teams to solve problems with limited resources and strict deadlines. It’s about bridging the gap between theory and practice, where calculations meet materials, and elegant designs face the brutal test of reality.
Building Valuable Skills: Communication, Project Management, and Unleashing Potential
This wide-ranging series, which includes designing simple rockets, catapults, bridges, furniture and even shoes, fosters invaluable skill development. Communication skills are tested as teams brainstorm, debate, and delegate tasks. Project management takes on a new urgency when deadlines loom and materials dwindle. The entertaining and engaging contests also reveal untapped potential, turning timid introverts into confident leaders and getting “big picture” leaders to focus on critical details.
A Breeding Ground for Innovation: Thinking Outside the Box
But the Engineering Olympics is more than just a skills test; it’s a breeding ground for innovation. Facing unexpected challenges and limited resources, teams are forced to think outside the box, drawing inspiration from seemingly unrelated disciplines and repurposing everyday objects into ingenious solutions. This unbridled creativity is the lifeblood of engineering, and fostering it within a competitive environment ignites a spirit of invention that can change the world.
The Power of Teamwork: Building Esprit de Corps
Perhaps the most unique benefit of the Engineering Olympics is the esprit de corps it cultivates. The shared struggle against deadlines, the thrill of unexpected success, and the disappointment of near misses – forge a powerful bond between teammates. This camaraderie helps create a network of mutual respect and collaboration that extends far beyond the final medal ceremony with Olympic Fanfare.
